My Summer Travel Day 5,6: Chandigarh; Sightseeing

If you missed the my journey till now check it out here. So I had left Kasauli relaxed and ready for another day of fun. We drove down to Chandigarh and checked-in at The Fern Residency.


As we were hungry we had our lunch on the way to the hotel at Sankalp Hotel. Its basically south-indian food you get there. It was quite refreshing to have that kind of food in north-india. And honestly South Indian food is my favorite. But enough of the food.

So we had a small nap in the hotel room and then it was time for some sightseeing!

So we asked the hotel staff and decided on visiting a couple of places: firstly the Rock Garden, then Sukhna Lake, then we went to a market in Sector 17 and finally had dinner at the Elante Mall. So let me explain what I saw or what you need to see at each of these places.

Nek Chand’s Rock Garden


I would honestly say, if you love art and are visiting Chandigarh you need to visit the Rock Garden. This rock garden is entirely built of throw-away items and industrial waste, home waste and recycled materials by Nek Chand. It is said he began building this garden secretly, using materials from various places in his spare time. He had hidden the garden for 18 years or so, but eventually the garden was discovered in 1975 by the authorities. By this time, he had expanded the garden into an area of 12 acres. The garden was to be demolished, but with locals favouring him, the rock garden was inaugurated as a public space in 1976.

Sukhna Lake

The Sukhna lake is a very popular place. What's unique about this lake is that it's a man-made lake. As we had started off late we missed the sunset at Sukhna Lake. Sukhna lake is nestled between the hills of the lower Himalayas. It was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier while building Chandigarh. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, it is one of the best places to see at the correct hours. Well, at least not as I did!

Market in Sector 17

Sector 17 is the heart of Chandigarh.. It may be the most crowded place in Chandigarh. MAinly because it's a great place to hangout with a number of shops, restaurants, and bars located here. Also there is a stage where every Saturday different events are held. 
You can purchase a huge range of garments here. Right from traditional to branded, you can get everything here. Some of the most popular things to buy here include shoes, handcraft, electronic goods, books, daily lifestyle, and fashion products.


Elante Mall

The Elante Mall is where you'll find Chandigarh's elite hanging out. Built to be a great competition to some malls out here in Mumbai, it's beautiful! This mall made all the local shopping arcades lose their charm, And one more thing, this place is where I found Chandigarh's most beautiful girls chilling! :P

Elante is named after L&T (pronounced El N Te (Elante). Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is a name we need not introduce as the name itself is a milestone in the history of infrastructural developments worldwide. L&T had a vision to offer a premium shopping arcade for Chandigarh and in Elante they see their vision achieved. 

Elante is designed to be just perfect. It has ample of open spaces, offers a nice ambience and is delight to be at.


Well, as you can see I saw too much for one day, but the next day we were to leave for Delhi from where we'll be coming back to Mumbai!
