Kutch Diaries: Mandvi Beach & Bauter Jinalay (72 temples)

Mandvi Beach, Kutch

Mandvi, a city in Kutch in the Indian state of Gujarat is an old city enclosed within the fort walls of the summer retreat for Maharao (king) of the Kachchh.  A good half day trip from Bhuj unless you want to spend more time on the beach. You can opt to stay in Mandvi and explore Bhuj and its surroundings.

The best time to visit Mandvi or the Great Rann of Kutch is October to March as it's quite pleasant out there during this period.

Mandvi Beach

Windfarm beach, as Mandvi Bech is known as, has windmills that are lined up at one end of the beach that generate electricity for the area around. Once upon a time, it was the largest wind farm in Asia.

Normally any place which has a beach tends to be very humid but Mandvi Beach seemed to be an exception! Throughout our time though it was sunny but it was equally pleasant and breezy.

The beach at Mandvi is not very dirty, though there were lots of stray dogs roaming around. This place has lots of camels and horses which are available for small rides at the beach if you wish to, though it is always preferred to take a long walk along the beach and experience the beautiful sunset.

Bauter Jinalay(72 Temples)

Located in Khoday on the Mandvi – Bhuj Road at about 15kms from Mandvi, Bauter Jinalay is a Jain Temple complex consisting of 72 Jain Derasars as the name suggests.

The temple is a great white marble structure with intricate carvings, like any other Jain Derasar. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main temple. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara and the surrounding 72 Derasars dedicated to other Tirthankaras, depicting idols from different Siddha Kshetra (holy places) across India. There is accommodation around the temple complex as well as the dining facility.

More details on places I visited during my visit to Kutch coming soon.

Annoying Co-Passengers we encounter during a plane flight

There are typical visitors of cinemas, typical clients at NYC Barber Shop, and typical co-passengers during a plane flight. Find out what kinds of people you’re very likely to encounter high above the ground: 1. Sleeping beauty The second you decide to use the table, the neighbor in front of you decides to get some sleep, thus bringing your initial inclination to nought. If you need that tray table badly, then ask the sleeping beauty politely to move back. You will sound more convincing if you mention an important project you have to finish by tomorrow. 2. Aggressive kid There is nothing more annoying than an uncontrolled kid, who keeps screaming and yelling. If you’ve lost your patience, then you can ask the parents to calm their offspring down. Another way out is to ask flight attendants for help, who can entertain the kid with wi-fi and snacks. 3. Over-talkative person There are many ways to kill time during a lengthy plane flight – some people quietly l...
